Library skills and accomplishments
Library Management
- Wrote and maintained policy and procedure manual for library services. Introduced Collection Development, Quality Improvement, and Censorship Plans.
- Prepared reports for procurements, research activities, patient and staff library usage. Maintained statistics.
- Projected and monitored library budget.
- Prepared library and assisted other departments for two successful JCAHO surveys (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).
- Trained OU student workers and WVUP staff and temporary employees. Supervised patient workers, interns and volunteers in the library at ODMH.
Library Services and Programs
- Provided reference services and technical instruction to consumers, staff, faculty, college students and community members.
- Created specialized bibliographies and performed literature searches pertaining to the subject of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, activity therapy and art. Expertly searched OhioLINK databases such as Medline, PsychINFO, CINAHL, Bibliography of the History of Art, Art Abstracts, Artstor, Electronic Journal Center, and Library Catalog. EBSCOhost databases, NY Times, ebrary and Sierra were primarily used at WVUP. Frequently used Pubmed and Internet Movie Database. Trained to search DIALOG.
- OU: provided curatorial work for the Frederick and Kazuko Harris Fine Arts Re-opening Celebration, a Faculty/Student Art Exhibition, Iran: Past and Present, and The Yao Ceremonial Artifacts Collection. ODMH: programmed events, therapeutic groups, and individual instruction such as Bibliographic Instruction, Medical Library Day, Open-houses, Health Information Literacy Skills, Bibliotherapy, Webliotherapy, Music Appreciation, Internet Skills, Adult Literacy, Art Show to Recovery, Pottery Lessons, Holiday Parties and Piano Recital, Walk to Wellness Information Fair, Puzzle Solving Skills, Guitar Lessons, Short Story Readings, Bookcart Visits for patients on the units, and a Bike Trip to the Public Library.
- Coordinated continuing medical education opportunities for clinicians (Grand Rounds, PsychLINK, PsychCME, and neuroscienceCME). The delivery of instruction included reports, articles in journals, audio conferences, and satellite teleconferences.
- Conducted training opportunities for patients to assist with library duties.
- Makerspace experience: developed a pottery workshop with the Occupational Therapy staff in the hospital and provided weekly pottery lessons to patients. 2000-2004.
- *First in state to develop a program offering Internet access to patients in a BHO Library.
Promotion of Library Services and Materials
- Marketing of Library Services. Published internal newsletters and email reader advisories. Monthly newsletters included The Librarian’s Choice and State of Mind.
- Organized library displays and poster sessions at information fairs.
- Created various brochures and handouts.
- Promoted specific books, videos, and websites with reviews that I wrote.
- Planned circulation of library materials. I advertised open library hours as well as provided access to library materials with a bookcart for patients.
- Provided professional journal Tables of Content service and distributed articles.

- West Virginia Library Association. Member of the Public Relations Committee. (Chair, 2016) Advocacy and promotion of librarianship and library service in West Virginia.
- Association of College & Research Libraries, Arts Section. Social Media editor/manager. Advocacy and promotion of librarians and specialists working in or interested in the fields of visual and performing arts.
- Communicated and interacted with a diverse population (Physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, activity therapists, support staff, college faculty, students, and patients at all intellectual levels).
- Worked with a patient population that frequently displayed emotional and behavioral difficulties as well as deaf, hard-of-hearing, and blind persons.
- Functioned as liaison to the State Library of Ohio and their services.
- Networked closely with The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill leadership and The Gathering Place (a community support agency).
Selection and Acquisition
- Selected reference books, art books, professional medical journals, leisure magazines, popular consumer health self-help materials, staff and patient education materials, multicultural materials, feature film videos and DVDs, ceramic art DVDs, popular music audiocassettes and CDs, media equipment, fiction and non-fiction books.
- Purchased medical reference books and journals for all departments in the entire behavioral healthcare organization.
- Assisted with the consolidation and distribution of library materials for two state hospital library closures.
- Procured donations.
Technical Services
- All functions of circulation and access services at WVUP.
- Conducted cataloging (Dewey for patients’ library and Library of Congress for staff library at ABH). Cataloged Yao ceremonial artwork and enhanced bibliographic records at OU.
- Designed databases. Working knowledge of Excel, Approach, and Access. I developed an online library catalog accessible to all employees using the ODMH Intranet.
- Processed interlibrary loan requests. Operated a Bookeye scanner.
- Adequately repaired damaged library materials. Selected materials for preservation.
- Inventoried feature film and music collections quarterly.
- Collaborated with faculty concerning course reserves.
